The Tartan Weaver’s Guide
This 4 3/8” x 10 1/4” hardbound book of 142 tartans is a delight for weavers of all experience levels. Author and tartan archivist James D. Scarlett presents color photographs and historical notes on each of the tartans included in his book. The thread counts for each design are provided below the tartan descriptions. The appendix consists of concise narratives on tartan weaving, a bibliography, a glossary of uncommon weaving teams for American and European weavers, and an index of surnames that use the tartans of other surnames.
Mr. Scarlett explains that the structure of the tartan weave is a 2/2 twill which makes a diagonal lines in the woven fabric. In a 2/2 twill, the weft thread in the shuttle travels over two warp threads and under two warp threads. The striped order of colors in the warp threads is repeated in the weft threads.
This book is informative, durable, and portable. It will prove a useful addition to your weaving library.
