Quilting with Manhole Covers
In a brief narrative, Shirley MacGregor explains that she began to notice Japan's decorated manhole covers during her early morning jogs through Japanese streets. Since 1978, numerous Japanese cities have selected designs unique to their respective local characteristics and have used these designs to paint their manhole covers. Throughout her book, Ms. MacGregor shows a color photo of each manhole cover on the right page and a color photo of a quilted interpretation (by various fellow quilters) of that same manhole cover on the left page. The effect ranges from interesting to humerous and on to stunning.
These circular designs are a nice change from square quilt blocks, but could easily be adapted to a square format (e.g. a bedspread) with the addition of square borders. For the fibre lover with spare fabric and/or an assortment of lovely threads, this book will provide a variety of ideas for projects.
Ms MacGregor writes in the introduction, "This is not a how-to book, but rather a collection of ideas and images intended to stir your imagination." Cyberfibres believes her purpose is clearly achieved.
