Japanese Embroidery Center Worth A Visit
The Japanese Embroidery Center in Dunwoody, Georgia is a fascinating fibre experience, whether you visit for a few hours or take a class there. It is located in a residential area near Atlanta and is accessible by car.
Inside the Center are several completed examples of Japanese embroidery featuring the ten phases of instruction and the forty-six stitching elements taught by the instructors. The stitching room is rectangular in shape with a back wall of glass, revealing the leafy woods behind the Center.
A cabinet for cloth made of paulownia wood stands along a side wall of the room. This wood has the special quality of expanding and contracting when temperature and humidity vary, keeping a constant air level inside the cabinet. Traditionally in Japan, a paulownia tree was planted when a girl was born, and by the time she was grown, the tree would be used to make a cabinet for her in which to store her silks and other clothing.
Spools of colorful single-ply silk thread lie in trays. Recent publications and embroidery tools and fabrics are available for purchase. Call ahead to make an appointment for your visit or to obtain information about upcoming classes.
