Taking Time for Blocking
Blocking is an extra step between finishing the pieces of a handworked garment and sewing them together in order to wear the garment as soon as possible! For this reason, it is very tempting to skip it.
CyberFibres encourages you – from the experience of having done it both ways – to take the time to block your handwork before you assemble the pieces. This practice will result in a better fitting garment that you will enjoy wearing.
The cardboard blocking board shown in the photo was purchased at a fabric store many years ago. Similar boards are currently available from Hancock Fabrics and other sewing shops. It is especially useful for blocking because of its printed grid which is measured in inches. This is very helpful when you want to block a garment piece to exact dimensions (e.g. ‘20 inches from underarm to lower edge of sweater').
Whenever you handwash your garment, be sure to lay it flat to dry, and it will resume its proper shape. Never hang it, wet or dry, on a hanger unless you want it to stretch
