Design and Make a Small Quilt for Baby, Friend, or You
Feature), you may have a fabric friend who would assist you with the piecing stage of the project. Using a ruler and Olfa cutter and board, you can stack 2-4 thicknesses of fabric and cut 2.5” strips, which can then be cut into 2.5” squares. Cut two strips of border fabric 4” x 36”; and cut two strips of border fabric 4” x 42”.
This is a gift you will enjoy making as much as you will enjoy giving. As CyberFibres discovered (seeNext, arrange squares in a design that is pleasing to you. You will need ten rows of nine squares each. Carefully stack the nine squares for Row 1 in the order you want them to appear from left to right. With right sides of fabrics together, stitch Square 1 to Square 2, making a ¼” seam between them. Then, stitch the Square 1 + Square 2 rectangle you just made to Square 3; continue this process until all nine squares for Row 1 have been joined. Repeat for Rows 2-10.
Then, carefully stack all ten completed rows, with Row 1 on top and Row 10 on the bottom. With right sides together, sew the rows together (the top edge of Row 2 to the bottom edge of Row 1; the top edge of Row 3 to the bottom edge of Row 2, etc.).
Place the right side of the joined squares quilt top and the right side of the border strips together and stitch the borders to the quilt top. Layer batting and backing fabric beneath the quilt top with borders, and choose to use machine quilting or hand quilting to finish your project
CyberFibres used the backing fabric as self-binding with mitered corners (see Review).
