Quilters Across Borders
In Summer 2013, CyberFibres visited Bedford, England and discovered a group of dedicated quilters learning from and stitching with designer Maggie Wise Wilkerson of “Sunflower Fabrics” in her garden studio. Having searched for the studio address on foot, CyberFibres was greeted with the question, “Would you like a cup of tea?”
On a cold December day later that year, three members of this group offered to help piece a baby quilt top for CyberFibres’ granddaughter-to-be. Maggie had cut 90 2.5” squares and four border panels from eight Liberty cotton prints and had them ready to use. Lyn and Sharon used a flannel board to place the various fabric squares in nine rows and ten columns. The final design avoided setting identical fabrics side-by-side and minimized identical pairs abutting corners above and below adjacent columns. By working in shifts, the quilters finished piecing the quilt top in a day. CyberFibres brought the pieced top back to the USA, added batting and a backing of one of the cotton prints, and hand-quilted the baby quilt keepsake in time for Anna Margaret’s 2014 arrival (see Advice). Baby Anna received a quilt to enjoy and cherish!
